Here is what's on around Kensington this December

December is always a lovely month in this part of London. While everyone is getting in the festive mood, there are dozens of events taking place not too far from our front doors. There are Christmas traditions at the likes of the Royal Albert Hall and Natural History Museum while some of the best entertainers around make a quick pit stop at the o2 and Apollo before driving home for Christmas.

If you’re coming to Kensington at this time of year or staying here with us at Park International and wondering what events you can go to in December, here is our pick of some of the best things to do around town in December. It all starts with visiting a very special Winter Wonderland.

More information on some of the events taking place throughout December:

    Winter Wonderland

    • Date: 21st November to 4th January 2020
    • Venue: Hyde Park

Now a Christmas institution for many of us, every year when the Winter Wonderland comes to Hyde Park it just seems to get bigger and bigger. This year there is a larger focus on providing premium experiences at the market/outdoor entertainment extravaganza with Paddington On Ice, Cirque Bezerk and a nightly comedy club on the go. And that’s before we even get to all the different food and drink on offer.

Remember that while it’s completely free to visit the Winter Wonderland and go around the markets, you will need to buy tickets in advance for many of the events.

    Ice Rink

    • Date: All Month
    • Venue: Natural History Museum

Speaking of Christmas traditions in London, what would winter be without the ice rink taking up residence outside NUM? The exact opening date for 2019 hasn’t been confirmed at the time of writing, but it will be open throughout December if you want to do something a little different in Kensington.

And for anyone who’d rather stick to solid ground, you could always seek out the alpine-style Café Bar and get yourself a hot chocolate to watch proceedings.

    Christmas Movies

    • Date: Throughout December
    • Venue: Princes Charles Cinema

It’s quite the thing now for cinemas around the country to show a few Christmas movies throughout the month, but the Price Charles just off Leicester Square has been running an enviable Xmas programme for years now.

Often overlooked for the fancier cinemas dotted around the area, they put on a great programme in December. Some of the films they’ll be showing in the lead up to Christmas include:

    • Die Hard 1 & 2
    • The Muppet Christmas Carol
    • It’s A Wonderful Life
    • A Christmas Story
    • Love Actually
    • Hook
    • Elf
    • Gremlins
    • Home Alone
    • The Nightmare Before Christmas
    • The Holiday
    • Scrooged
    • Lethal Weapon

In fact, if you can think of a film that has something to do with Christmas, there’s a good chance they’ll be showing it. You can see all the seasonal listing on their website right here.

    A Christmas Carol

    • Date: Throughout December
    • Venue: The Old Vic

I mean, is there a better thing to do in London at this time of year than watch A Christmas Carol in one of the city’s most beloved theatres. There’s at least one performance practically every day up to Christmas Eve, and it’s come highly rated from the like of Time Out, who gave it five stars.

    Love Actually in Concert

    • Date: 1st December
    • Venue: Eventim Apollo

Quite a new trend this year is to have a live musical accompaniment to films being shown, and Love Actually is getting in on the action for a second year with this one-off screening at the Apollo. You might struggle to remember the score of Love Actually, but it does have a good bit of brass and some full-on Christmas vibes.

    • Date: 4th December
    • Venue: Eventim Apollo

What a year for popstar Sigrid. Her debut album has been an absolute smash here in the UK with every single being a massive hit. This show will be a blast and there’s no better venue than the Apollo to have some poptastic fun.

Dino Snores for Kids Christmas Special at Natural History Museum

    • Date: 7th December
    • Venue: Natural History Museum

Possibly the only time you’d think it’s a good idea for a child to sleep under a blue whale, Dino Snores is having a Christmas special for its famous kids-only sleepovers in the museum.

There will be an after-hours tour of exhibits and Christmas themed workshops.

You can get full information on the Natural History Museum website

    An Evening with Michael Bublé

    • Date: 9th and 10th December
    • Venue: o2 Arena

Walk into any café in Kensington after November 31st and there’s a very good chance you’ll hear the legendary crooner’s Christmas album being played. With two nights at the o2, you’re guaranteed to hear a handful of Christmas songs in the mix.

Christmas with the Royal Choral Society at Royal Albert Hall

    • Date: 10th December
    • Venue: Royal Albert Hall

The annual Christmas show from the Royal Choral Society has been going strong since 1871 and is a landmark festive event for the Albert Hall.

    Bjorn Again

    • Date: 12th December
    • Venue: o2 Sheperd’s Bush

It may not be 100% Christmassy, but who doesn’t love a bit of ABBA? Bjorn Again has been going longer than the original band now so expect plenty of classics and a Christmas tune or two thrown in for good measure.

    Carols at Royal Albert Hall

    • Date: 21st to 24th December
    • Venue: Royal Albert Hall

We don’t mind if you get a little loud with vocal practice in your room before you head out to carols at Royal Albert Hall. It’s quite an uplifting and fun experience to join in with thousands and sing along to Christmas Carols, even if you’re not quite good at keeping in key.

    Peter Pan Cup

    • Date: 25th December
    • Venue: Hyde Park

London can be incredibly quiet on Christmas Day as the city shuts down, but in one corner of Hyde Park, you can expect a few shrieks as the Serpentine Swimming Club take a dip in the lake.

It’s a tradition going back to the 1800s that sees member jump into freezing cold water to take part in a very brief 91m race. There’s no award for coming first, but it is something different to do on Christmas Day.

    New Year’s Eve

    • Date: 31st December
    • Venue: By the Thames

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to picking what to do on New Year’s Eve in London. A lot of restaurants in the area will host late dinners where you can casually raise a glass to the new year. You could always head down to the river and join in with the thousands braving the cold (and most likely rain) to watch the fireworks.

Have a look online too for special New Year’s Eve cruise on the Thames where you can get a unique view of affairs from inside a cosy cruise boat.
