    The Proms 2019

August puts us right in the middle of one of the most magical times of year here in Kensington, especially for classical music fans.

The Proms are back with a programme chock full of performances at venues like the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall; both not too far from our doors.

Having a brief look at this year’s line-up, it’s hard to nail down what is a must-see show when there’s so much going on, but if we had to choose some of our highlights would be:

    • Prom 20: Pekka Kuusisto and the BBC SSO – 3rd August
    • Prom 27: The Sound of Space: Sci-Fi Film Music – 7th August
    • Prom 40: Queen Victoria's 200th Anniversary – 16th August
    • Prom 46: City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra – 22nd August

The Proms runs right through the month up to the final night in September. We can’t wait to experience the season, especially for the great time guests staying with us will have.

You can see the entire events listings on the BBC Proms website

    Royal Albert Hall Tour

    • Date: Throughout the month
    • Venue: Royal Albert Hall

If you haven’t been fatigued from all the Proms action in the area, we highly recommend taking a tour of one of the world’s most famous venues. Since opening in 1871 everything from WWE wrestling and Beyoncé to Albert Einstein and Eurovision have all held court in the main auditorium.

The history of the building and the role it’s played in wider history for nearly 150 years now is all uncovered in this unique tour showcasing some of the unique events that have taken place and why the building is an engineering feat. If you are lucky you might even catch a glimpse of an artist during their soundcheck!

More information about the tour can be found on the Royal Albert Hall website.

DJ Yoda and House Gospel Choir Soundsystem

    • Date: 2nd August
    • Venue: Natural History Museum

It’s not often you get to say you’ve partied underneath a 25-metre blue whale skeleton, but Hintze Hall at the Natural History Museum is going to turn into one of the most unique venues in London for one night only when DJ Yoda comes to give another mix heavy set.

If you’re one for skipping support acts, we’d heavily recommend you don’t for this particular gig as the House Gospel Choir Soundsystem will be putting on a “have to be there” performance, especially considering the space it’s taking place in.

    • Date: 2nd August
    • Venue: o2 Sheperd’s Bush Empire

One of the longest-running names in punk, for nearly 50 years now, Descendents have been a pioneering force in hardcore punk. They show no signs of slowing down with a gig at Sheperd’s Bush. Expect a deep dive in the back catalogue and a lot of Milo t-shirts.

Ticket information can be found here

    Prophets of Rage

    • Date: 12th August
    • Venue: o2 Sheperd’s Bush Empire

Like getting three gigs for the price of one, the politically charged supergroup will be making one of two UK stops of their European tour here in London. A must for fans of RATM, Audioslave, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill.

    Notting Hill Carnival

    • Date: 24th-26th August
    • Venue: Throughout Notting Hill

The population of Kensington swells by two million every August bank holiday weekend when the Notting Hill Carnival is in full swing. Now one of the most notable carnivals in the world, the streets have one big party atmosphere and for anyone who hasn’t been before it can be quite the surprise.

Information on the festival can be found at the Notting Hill Carnival website.
